I got 9/18. The average is 7/18.

Posted by: Speedy at December 3, 2004 6:09 PM | Permalink to CommentThe real test would be on Japanese, Chinese, and Koreans themselves. How many times have I heard a Japanese proclaim to me how they can tell the difference between a Japanese and a Korean from "how big Korean faces are."
Posted by: butuki at December 4, 2004 1:48 PM | Permalink to CommentI'd never heard that one myself. How many did you get by the way??
Posted by: Setsunai at December 6, 2004 11:43 AM | Permalink to CommentI didn't want to say, because it might sound like boasting, but then again I did grow up with Japanese, Koreans, and Chinese around me all the time. I got 14. The Chinese were fairly easy to tell. I had trouble between the Koreans and the Japanese.
Posted by: butuki at December 7, 2004 12:19 AM | Permalink to CommentImpressive score. Did you use clothing/fashions etc. to help you decide? Someone said they could tell them apart by their fashions more than their facial features. (I wouldn't know about that myself, having only realized this week that the boots in Japan in November/December are not actually a keep warm thing!
Posted by: Setsunai at December 7, 2004 12:15 PM | Permalink to CommentYes, mostly fashion, in the clothing and in the way makeup was used on the women's faces (Japanese women don't usually thin their eyebrows to thin slits, whereas Koreans do). It tends to make their faces a bit harsher. Chinese women tend to be less up to date on fashions and the men often care less about their hairstyles. I found the men much harder to judge on this count, perhaps because men's fashions don't change all that much culture to culture. The four people I got wrong were all male.
If the test had been live people moving about I think it would have been much easier. Japanese and Koreans tend to move in very similar ways, but the Koreans are a bit less stiff, being more physically and emotionally expressive than Japanese, whereas Chinese move in a much more "fluid" and "softer" way. At the same time Koreans use a lot more of the old polite gestures like bowing and bobbing the head during conversations and placing their hands over their mouths when laughing, while Japanese tend to use more Americanized gestures of the hands open-toothed smiles (which didn't exist among young women twenty years ago).
Because of the similarity of the Japanese and Koreans in terms of body language and use of language I can't help but feel that the Japanese originally came from Korea. And, after getting to know a number of Native Americans in Oregon, and seeing their astonishing similarity to Japanese in ways of joking, interacting with one another, and even seeing a spiritual and philosophical world, it seems obvious that the Indians in the Americas must have come over the land bridge from Asia.

Very interesting stuff, Butuki. I'll be looking out for eyebrows, bows, fluid movements and bad fashions the next time I am in a room full of Asians not wearing national costumes!
Just on the language point, I reckon Korean sounds more like a dialect of Japanese (or vice versa of course) than a language in its own right.
Posted by: Setsunai at December 8, 2004 2:29 PM | Permalink to CommentAiyaiyaiyai! As a German/ Filipino/ Black American, what will I have to wear?!? Lederhosen with a barong tagalog while brandishing a spear and afro?
By the way, it just occurred to me that I have no idea what the national costume of Ireland is. The Scots wear kilts. What do the Irish wear? Also kilts?
Korean sounds like someone speaking Japanese with a lot of rocks in their mouths. And, as many Japanese have said to me, like they are angry all the time. I wonder what English sounds like to the Japanese? Or Japanese to the Zulu?
Posted by: butuki at December 8, 2004 11:33 PM | Permalink to CommentIf you did wear that combination Butuki, you could probably get a job working for Beat Takeshi on Koko wa Hen Dayo Nihon.
You know what, I haven't a clue what the Irish national costume is...Extra-large green football jerseys and face paint is probably the closest we have these days.
Posted by: Setsunai at December 9, 2004 10:41 AM | Permalink to CommentI am filipino and spanish, but i can tell between the asians. japanese have oval faces and have the sharp noses which makes them look more caucasian. Korean are bigger and have more defined and beutiful cheek bones and have bigger eyes which make them the best looking asians around the world. AND THE CHINESE, i am sorri to say this. have no cheekbones and their faces are round and they have smaller eyes which makes them less attractive. Chinese are very similar to vietnamese, FILIPINOS LIKE me TEND TO LOOK LIKE a mix of japanese and spanish, so We ARE NEXT TO THE KOREANS IN BEING THE best looking. SORRI TO DISS ON THE CHINESE, even tho i said that i have a lot of chinese friends that are tight.
Posted by: PINOY BOI at December 26, 2004 12:30 AM | Permalink to CommentI strongly oppose to what Pinoy Boi says. How many Chinese have you met? I bet you've met only the Chinese from the Southern China origins such as the Cantonese. Have you travelled throughout China? For every Asian face you've ever encountered, there's a Chinese to match it. There are Chinese (in the northweat region of China) who look exactly like cacasians, are you aware of that? From my experience, every other Asian country is homogeneous, China is the only country that is history and culture rich beyond your shallow imagination. beauty is so subjective so you stop judging.

Posted by: Pinoy boi at April 29, 2005 2:55 AM | Permalink to CommentI'm a Filipina and I am a bit taken aback on what Pinoy boi has said. I don't see why you should insult the Chinese when majority of Filipinos have Chinese blood? Also, have you ever noticed how many Filipinas are considered beautiful whenever they are half-Chinese or, as the Filipinos fondly call them, Chinitas?
And I also don't also see why you guys should bash the Filipinos saying they're unattractive? That's a bit unfair, don't you think? Have you actually been to the Philippines? Go to some upscale mall and you'll see a lot of attractive Filipinas.
I've been to China (haven't been to Korea and Japan, but would LOVE to go there someday) and I found a lot of Chinese (especially in Shanghai) so beautiful.
Posted by: Kl at May 26, 2005 3:19 PM | Permalink to CommentI think Japanese and Korean people are harder to tell apart sometimes, because of all the inter-racial mixing during the 50 yrs of Japanese occupation of Korea. Not only were there Japanese people in Korea, but Korean people were imported to Japan to work and many stayed there.
I can usually tell the difference, but fashion and hairstyles definitely have a large influence. With the beginnings of the acceptence of Japanese influence in Korea, it'll be more difficult to tell.
Someone said that Fillipinos aren't attractive to Chinese, Koreans, and Japanese. I can't personally agree, but maybe it's cuz they're tan? CKJs fear the sun as if they were vamps and strive for that porcelain skin of dolls.

Posted by: Lee Cho Kim at June 11, 2005 2:14 PM | Permalink to CommentI have to agree with pinoy boi. I think fillo's are absolutely beautiful. And I also agree that Korea has some of the most stunning women in all of Asia. There is something about a Korean women that makes them so easily distinguishable from their Japanese and Chinese sisters. Whilst the latter countries have some real lookers, Korean women have a certain 'quality' to their beauty which I think sets them apart. i mean, I haven't yet seen a Japanese or Chinese woman that can match to beautiful innocence of hyori, kim hee-sun and BoA to name a few.
Posted by: cazzie at June 14, 2005 8:58 PM | Permalink to CommentI think fillo's are more appealing in the western conception of beauty. their facial structure in general appears to be more 'anglo-saxon', ie. higher cheekbones, prominent brow, defined jawline...I thought it was because of their spanish heritage. Maybe that's why they aren't considered 'beautiful' to many East Asian people, who have their own cultural conceptions of beauty.

a large portion of my closest friends are japanese, maybe why i was good at picking them out???

Kim Hee Sun is natural. If you have seen her before/after pictures [I've seen a ton of pics of her], she was always beautiful. She has an air of elegance about her that I've always loved. Same nose, same eyes, face shape, etc. Hyori is a natural beauty as well. She might have gotten minor touches to enhance her beauty, but if you see her before pictures, she was stunning even then. Her pallate was naturally beautiful. Song Hye Kyo is also natural, as well as Kim Tae Hee. BoA.. i think her beauty is exagerrated imo. While Korean actresses do get plastic surgey, the top notch, best known ones are natural as far as Koreans are concerned.
Besides, plastic surgery is still more of a Western fanatacism. US still ranks the top spot for highest number of plastic surgeries.

I totaly disagree with this because it is not fair
that many asian judges flipinos because they are different, ex last names, eyes, bone structure simillar to caucasian, culture. CKJ (chinese koreans japanese) are constantly poking fun at them because I think they are jealous, to tell u the truth i think that many asians and blacks and hispanics try to perfect their beauty to "CAUCASIAN" style. Why do u think everyone gets nose jobs to look like white people? I know, cus personaly it is my
dirty little secret. Though we try to hide it, we know that that is what we want. Everyday we face racial remarks comments. If we were white, i bet some people wud feel kind of superior. I know u r lying, I have been to Atlay and Burquin
in China. There are no such things as chinese people looking likt caucasians, in china. Did youn know that the neighbouring country Russia is populated with native ice dwellers? And did u know that those natives look fairly simillar to the inuits in canada and look kind of like us, (im chinese). So before u say quote " looks exactly like causasians". think again, i know u said that to pinoy boi to counter his ethnicity. But he cant deny it, his country was under the influence for nearly 400 years. To be honest i feel jealous to what filippinos look like.
Yes i have done my homework, so before u say anything bad and stupid to others, u might realize that u r embarrasing our people, (im assuming ur chinese). But i felt taken back at what he said too, there are some chinese who look like flipinos but have lighter yellow pale skin. I have no problems with race but if people like u r saying stuff to impress the filipinos that we r better than them, well u r just plain ignorant.

That's pretty funny considering that fact that FILIPINOS ARE MUTTS, and majority of them have chinese/japanese blood. Not to mention spanish, mongolian & african blood, also (this might explain why some filipinos are so tan). So, basically you just contradicted everythin' you have just said. I have studied the filipino culture and i must say they have the most unique faces in asia. For example; some filipinos can look really asian, just like CKJ's, (and i have mistaken some) some can look Latino & and some are just so dark that they can past for Blacks. Unlike majority of the asian who all look the same.

I strongly agree, majority of the CKJ's have this obession of looking more western. Why do you think mostly all asians are so obessed about having a damn fold on their eyes. And that might explain the reason why CKJ's are constantly poking fun at filipinos cause they're JEALOUS. Jealous of looking more western, jealous because they're eyes are more open. And i admit, i'm one of those jealous asians. Shows how everyone in this damn world is never content with how they look. They're always wanting something more to the point where they get their whole face altered. Just so they can look more of 'this' race or 'that' race.
