Okay, so we've no strikers without torn strings or broken limbs, and our makeshift strikers are also crocked. In fact, lining out up front for Liverpool these days is akin to signing a pre-agreement on a contract you've taken out on yourself. Ian Rush may be back in the picture soon enough if this keeps up.
Then you've got the defence. Hyppia and Carragher have no fucking clue--absolutely none, not an idea--what to do with Henry. Arsenal always get lucky decisions against us (remember Francis "the Chin" Jeffares blatant dive and the subsequent penalty awarded at Anfield a couple of seasons ago). We're deriving inspiration from Djimi Traore and Igor Biscan, who with all due respect were not put on this earth to be Oracles.
Then you've got Harry Kewell still on the pies, and Chris Kirkland likely to get injured coming out of the tunnel, banging his head off the "This is Anfield" sign or something.
Arsenal are still wounded and yet to recover after their defeat at United. Ominously, though, Campbell is returning on Sunday instead of plant for the other team, or just plant, Mr. Cygan.
"So what," I hear me say. It all means nothing. Just a few factors that could be interpreted in any number of ways (with the aid of a drill for your head). I'm betting (quite literally) on Liverpool. Forget water and wine and all that transubstantiation lark my friends: this is a real leap of faith. At least, afterwards, I get to watch my money turn into Roland's lunch.
Posted by Setsunai at November 26, 2004 5:04 PM | TrackBackThe return of Campbell is a bonus, but football is a strange game. Like you said, Arsenal haven't really been up to scratch since they lost to Man U.
It's good to see some blind faith in supporting your team. Here's to Monday's lunch.
I think we have a chance, honest to (the blind) god.
Posted by: Pat at November 26, 2004 6:48 PM | Permalink to CommentI honestly don't know what way it's going to go. Arsenal have faltered of late, but I have yet to see convincing peformance from Liverpool this year. I'm hoping against hope we won't be hovering just above the relegation zone after this run of games against opposition in the top six or seven, but would't be altogether surprised.
Who's going to score the goals we'll need to beat anyone? Unless Gerard finds his shooting boots again there's no goals in this team. I despair. I've been calling for the head of Hyppia on a plate for the best part of 2 seasons now, must be the slowest defender in the Premiership. Although I have to disagree about Caragher. I think he's been our best and only consistent performer this season.
Of the three Benitez signings who've played so far this year, only Alonso has brought anything to the team. Josemi has all the defensive nous as Kevin Keegan's defensive strategies, the positioning of a dodo and reads the game at a junior infants level. Garcia is a nothing player.
So, as the fourth of the great Spanish hopes comes back from injury this week I'm hoping he's more Xabi than Luis.
Speedy: I was talking about dealing with Henry only. I think both Carragher and Hyppia are doing well this year. Not a lot of pace, I agree, but quite solid for the most part. Carragher especially. Did you see the second half against Deportivo in Spain?
You're a bit harsh on Garcia too, I reckon, but I agree that Josemi doesn't have a lot besides fight. But Garcia's not that bad, is he? Lots of battle, not afraid to shot, linked well with Cisse before Cisse broke his leg. And he looks like he wants to win, which is more than can be said for some of the lemons we've had in recent years.
I sat through the Monaco away game last night and was very unimpressed. There were many moments when players had no one to pass to at all. But Kewell, obviously unfit still, was trying perhaps the hardest of anyone except Gerrard when he came on, which is a very positive sign, so I'm going to lay off the pies references. Judging on this performance, I think Kewell could still come good too.
Viva Benitez. It's a bad run of injuries and we're only starting. Still going to beaten on Sunday though.

Posted by: Pat at November 29, 2004 5:25 PM | Permalink to CommentMellor was very calm after it too, not getting carried away at all. (He may have been in shock, though.) I only saw the last 15 minutes as I couldn't wake up in time this morning, but it was some goal. Seems like Benitez got it right tactically, and I'd like to thank him for a very nice lunch.

Liverpool were certainly deserved winners, but I wouldn't get too carried away with the win, they were playing an Arsenal in decline.
The Gunners need to shuffle their pack and stop thinking they are better than most teams in the league. It's wake up time.......
